Hello to one and all....

Post by vjrhemsley » Sun May 10, 2020 4:23 pm

Hi.

I thought it about time I posted something if only to say hello and introduce myself.

I am in the category of punter that the site describes as having no on-line right to bet. It is getting to be beyond a joke, and my current position in terms of the max win allowed for horse racing bets (which covers about 90% of my betting) with the major players is something like as follows: £100 Sky, £20 Hills, £10 Bet365, £5 Ladbrokes, and yes £0 with Coral, and the accounts closed with Betfred, VCBet, Betway. Betair Sportsbook (BSP) and PPower seem to have varying maximums and hats off (for now) to Unibet and Star Sports. I am aware of Hills, Sky and BSP at least having Minimum Bet Guarantees in place after a certain time which I welcome, and I would love to see this rolled out across the board. As a result of the on-line restrictions I tend to use Betfair Exchange the most.

I accept that bookmakers do need to have some limits or maximums in place in order to run their businesses, but the punitive restrictions and closures are not fair or justifiable. I am not looking to arb, cheat or bet for a living. I just want to be able to bet and not penalised for having the termerity of finishing in front, taking the best odds on offer or following selections of a good tipster. What really irks me is that I am struggling to find another form of commerce where the account restrictions and/or closures would be viewed as anything but discriminatory.

Enough for now.

Keep up the great campaigning, whether that be account restrictions, ring-fencing of customer's monies, safeguarding of problem gamblers or scrutiny and probing of The Regulators and the legislation that underpins betting in the UK. Would love to know how I can help as I've reached the point where I want to stop whinging and doing something to help force the changes that are needed.

PS - loved the 3 mini interviews with 'Jimmy Justice' on The Star Sports website.

Hi Vince,

Thank you for your post.

What you explain is like a plague if a punter decides to try hard, e.g. study. We've had numerous meetings with the Gambling Commission and the Department for Media, Culture and Sport about account restrictions. A fair four word summary is, "They couldn't care less."

However, with the impending review of the Gambling Act (2005) now is the time to prepare for further action. The priorities of the review will be the protection of vulnerable people and crime linked to gambling. However, a central theme of the regulation of gambling in the UK has always been fairness. It's up to restricted punters to form a small group who will prepare and submit evidence to the review.

I (JJ) on behalf of J4P will help to co-ordinate anything and share our experience with the government and regulators, but I'm not leading it. For over four years now I've given time (ave 20-25 hours per week) and money to help people get refunds of over £1.5 million from gambling companies and one of the many things I've learnt is that 'numbers of people' are important. MPs like to see data, even if it's sometimes inaccurate (the gambling industry are good at that). The fight will be difficult as 'winners' aren't a priority for government. In fact, they reduce the tax take for the government, so fairness against a loss of income is a difficult sell.

I do think there are enough good people out there to put up a good fight. However, J4P will not co-ordinate with anyone who dresses themselves up as being a punter advocate, but receives money from the gambling industry, e.g. many so called punter websites.

I leave it with everyone registered on here. You have this forum to move things forward or we can do it in private on info@justiceforpunters.org

One last thing, this isn't just a problem for horse racing punters, it happens in any sport if a punter is deemed to have an edge. So, if you bet on football, tennis, cricket, etc please do consider it.

Good morning JJ, Re your above when you comment that numbers count do you have a minimum effective one in mind.? I suspect that like myself other J4P members have as an example spent a few minutes e mailing our MP and or the GC but as far as i am aware this has never been attempted in a pre organized and collective way. ?

The main beef remains account closure via punitive restriction, but as more customers are becoming aware there are plenty of other poor practices which affect all punters and they only continue because of our apathy, and there are millions of us UK sports bettors.

With the current virus situation i feel now would not be the best time to attempt a mass specific e mailing but there would be no harm in laying the groundwork for a future one. Indeed when this forum first started my hope was that it would enable this but the opportunity is still there, and if we do not take or attempt it then nothing will change.

A strategy which we could implement when racing resumes and would prove effective is to with hold our business and also tell the Bookmakers why. Perhaps a forlorn hope but one which would work and lets be honest would also actually save the majority of punters money.!

Yesterday, I put this topic on our Twitter account (over 4000 followers) asking for people who would be willing to give some time for free to co-ordinate what we're talking about. We've had plenty 'likes' and 'retweets', but the only person who's offered any actual help is a member of the Horse Bettors Forum, i.e. somebody who is already volunteering. This is so depressing.

As we may have discussed before my ideal is to have punter in all 650 MP constituencies who would contact their MP with either pre-written messages or if they wish their own. We already have a facility on our website that makes this easy: https://justiceforpunters.org/find-your ... tact-them/

There never has been a better time. MPs are fed up of the gambling industry and all the terrible stories of exploitation. We had another one of our cases on BBCr4 yesterday: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000j1y5 around 17 minutes in. It will not take much to get MPs on-side.

But after so much voluntary effort for so long my enthusiasm is low at present. Like I say I will help, but I do need a group of 4-5 to lead and liaise with other services to get things moving.

All the best,

JJ

Hi JJ your above is both understood and understandable. Tbh my enthusiasm has also declined which is of course exactly what the Bookmakers anticipated and hoped for. However i would feel interest in becoming one of the 4-5 you mention.

Apologies for being slow to respond to the subsequent replies to my initial post and I agree that the response is disappointing. However there is a point of principle and fairness here that I am not prepared to do nothing about. I am sorry to hear that your enthusiasm is waning after the tireless and thankless efforts you have put in on behalf of so many. However I was sincere in my offer of help and no I have no hidden agenda on behalf of myself or gambling companies. I will therefore be contacting you on the email address provided.
