Hooded thugs targeted bookmakers staffed by lone female worker

A pair of hooded knife-wielding thugs robbed a bookmakers staffed by a lone female worker.

Stephen Barker and Daniel Smith had their faces covered with scarves when they targeted a Ladbrokes in Middlesbrough at on January 15 last year.

Teesside Crown Court heard the larger man, Smith, had a knife and jumped over the counter.

They pushed a female cashier, who was alone in the shop, as they searched for cash, reports the Gazette.

Barker, 26, and Smith, 31, eventually took £1,600 from the betting shop, said prosecutor Shaun Dryden.

The masked men stuffed the money into pillowcases then left.

They were seen looking out of the window at police activity at the bookies’ before they ran off.

Police identified Smith and Barker from CCTV as the men in the pub.

When Barker, of Grangetown , was arrested six days later, officers found a hooded top similar to that worn by one of the robbers.

On Smith’s phone, police discovered searches on The Gazette’s website relating to the Ladbrokes robbery, and texts asking what clothing had been seized.

In interview and in the trial, the men maintained they were acting suspiciously in the pub because they had been involved in a cannabis deal in a nearby alleyway.

But they denied being involved in any robbery at Ladbrokes.

Smith, of Clynes Road, Grangetown, was also jailed for two years for possessing a bladed article, which is to run concurrently.
