Betting is Dead

Post by texaspete69 » Sat Jan 27, 2018 8:26 pm

Hello.

I have recently found Justice for Punters and wanted to share a couple of thoughts. I was hoping you could give me some feedback as I may be starting to lose a grip on reality when it comes to online betting. I feel punters are treated very badly and bookmakers are getting away with it.

According to one online source the definition of betting is 'to risk a sum of money or valued item against someone else's on the basis of the outcome of an unpredictable event such as a race or game.'

If a cricket match was fixed and money made from online bookmakers, the 'fixers' could face imprisonment. The money placed with the bookmaker would not count as betting, according to the definition above, as the outcome of the event was entirely predictable (by one party in the transaction). This is grossly unfair and tantamount to stealing. If the bookmaker knew that a match was fixed they would refuse bets or maybe even take them on, 'just for fun'.

Modern bookmakers, as you are probably aware, track our every move, identify actual and potential winners then restrict or close their accounts. The Gambling Commission stated, when they wrote to me, that this is their right just like an insurance company who decides not to insure certain drivers or homeowners. If we follow this through, only losing punters are left i.e. the outcome of the relationship between punter and bookmaker is known. In other words, the outcome is fixed. Therefore, money staked with the bookmaker would not count as betting, according to the definition above, as the long term outcome of the event was entirely predictable (by one party in the transaction). This is grossly unfair and tantamount to stealing. If the punter knew this they would probably not give the bookmaker money or maybe they would, 'just for fun'. Losing punters do not know this.

Casinos factor in a winning advantage into their games, just like a fruit machine in a pub. Most people know this when handing over their money i.e. they will lose their money in the long run and so play for entertainment. Online sports bookmakers should make this same premise clear on the first page of their websites...'you CANNOT win money betting on sports in the long run. The money you SPEND on this website is for entertainment purposes only.' Alternatively, they could be made to accept bets or be banned from operating in the UK.

Match fixers and online bookmakers offer the same thing; a certain outcome...therefore, betting is dead...let's bring it back from extinction.

Hi

Thank you for your posting.

We agree with your observations about tracking, profiling and turning a gambling licence into something it is not.

We've had a lot of contact with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) re the tracking and in many cases tracking that breaches the Data Protection Act (1998). As yet, despite me personally winning a case against SkyBet for illegal tracking the ICO has done nothing of any significance, i.e. so far they've been useless at upholding UK and EU law. We're told they are investigating the online gambling industry, but unlike other on-going investigations, e.g. the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) one nobody knows anything it, which makes us somewhat cynical. Secrecy is what the gambling industry specialises in and regulators should not fall into the same category.

Re 'not laying a bet' we are and have for two years campaigned for a minimum bet/liability law, which needs new legislation. We've met with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport twice about it, the Gambling Commission and one of our main volunteers was the primary reason for the meeting this week in the House of Lords about it: http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/ ... __says_MP/ I was there, as they saying goes and this newspaper article reflects what I thought about the meeting, i.e. the MPs and Lords who camapign for the industry feel that their practices on this topic are wrong and that they need to change. Sums it up really when the friends you 'wine and dine' even think you're wrong.

The massive nightmare for the industry this week was this: http://www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk/ne ... -open.aspx . Without sounding too arrogant three of our volunteers have been a major influence on this happening. It is proof that the Gambling Commission are fed up with giving the gambling industry chances to treat their customers fairly. What it means is that they want more power to fine and levy other sanctions, even to withdraw licences, if the industry does not make some big improvements as to how it treats its customers - about time too.

DON'T forget anybody can contribute to this, so all get contacting the Gambling Commission.

Thank you again for your posting and feel free to copy and paste my posting on other forums you may use.

Reading this from over two years ago seems like the GC wilted and did nothing or the MPs paid you lip service and maintained the status quo (probably to still avail themselves of the race days out).

You're correct. The CEO at the GC left and was replaced by a person who's been there since 2006 - old school. The GC and DCMS have no confirmed to us that there is no interest in a minimum bet (liability) law, i.e. bookmakers can close who they like, when they like.
